JUNIOR GOLF ACADEMY

The Junior Golf Academy is open to all young players up to and including the age of 16.

The section will meet from 2 pm to 4 pm every Sunday afternoon. An organized program will ensure that there will be an opportunity for all to practice in a competitive game of golf each week, depending on individual ability.

As well as the game, there will be coaching available from our Head PGA Teaching Professional – Jon Barnes. This will be a group session for up to 8 Juniors at a time, and will last for one hour.

Juniors may come along just for the Competition, or just for the coaching, or for both. We also hope to encourage social interaction amongst juniors during each afternoon meeting.

Our published Junior membership for the club is £100. From now on, this figure will only apply to those aged 11 to 16. A new membership rate of £50 will apply to those who wish to join aged 10 and under. Membership gives full access to the course at any time, provided a tee time is booked with the Pro-shop beforehand. Junior members with a club handicap are also eligible for entry into all club competitions following the applicable rules of each competition.

Costs for a Sunday afternoon will be just £1 for club members to play in the organized competition. Those who have not taken up membership are also welcome, but they will be asked for a green fee of an additional £5 for the afternoon. The group coaching sessions will cost £5 each time, but there is no requirement for anyone to commit themselves to taking any particular number of sessions.

SUCCESS IN 2009

The 2009 golfing season saw Ampfield Golf Club take part in a number of pro-am tournaments.

We were delighted when Ampfield Golf Club won its first ever pro-am tournament at the Oxfordshire Golf Club. The team was lead by Ampfields head professional Jon Barnes along with two of Ampfields directors Paul and John Hazell and a member of Ampfield Golf Club, Andrew Toomer. The team managed a total of (-19) to win by one shot and claim the title along with some excellent prizes, which included full Galvin Green suits for each amateur. Our head professional Jon Barnes finished fourth with a score of (-4), which included an eagle at the par 4, 14th hole!

Ampfield also took part in the Cornish Festival, with the same team as above and played three pro-am rounds at Perranporth, Newquay and St Enedoc Golf Clubs, finishing in the top 15 out of over 60 teams. We were happy with the result but the team felt as though they could have contended for the title had it not been for the terrible weather conditions they endured whilst playing at the windy seaside links of Perranporth. However, the team is very much looking forward to trying again in 2010.

Jon’s first win of the 2009 season saw him make a new course record at Hockley Golf Club, shooting a 65. Jon then went on to win a pro-am at the Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club and then a further three wins.

Jon also finished ninth in the PGA Welsh Open Championships.

Jon’s end to the 2009 golfing season saw him finish one spot down from last year but still a very impressive second place in the Hampshire PGA Order of Merit.

We look forward to seeing jon back in action in may 2010, good luck Jon!

COURSE RESTRUCTURE

Late 2008 saw many improvements to the golf course and surrounding areas. Our grounds men have been working hard to create a more aesthetically pleasing course in general. Specific areas of improvement have been the tree lined hedges on the 4th, 8th and 14th respectively. Also on the 8th and 9th holes the conifer trees have been carefully sculpture from the ground up, which helps the members find their balls on the occasional wayward golf shot. Irrigation systems were also installed running down the 1st and 4th holes and also from the 15th green to the 12th tee. This has dramatically improved the drainage throughout the winter months.

The greens are better than they have ever been according to our head green keepers Paul Websdane and Peter Spratt, after the purchase of our new equipment. The greens are rolling faster than ever in the summer months and have become much firmer since the holotining and scarifying has taken place. This has helped the greens endurance and the bounce on approach shots. We are very keen to continually improve the greens and will continue to do so ready for the busy summer period.

New features include a second pond at the back of the 1st green and a bridge will be built to improve the walkway from the 3rd green to the 4th tee.

Our current task is the rebuilding of the second tee and other tees will also be rebuilt and possibly raised during spring. The tees that potentially need refurbishment will be the 6th, 10th 11th and 14th, pending members’ feedback. The next major task following on from this will be the improvement of the bunkers, i.e. drainage, sand quality and definition.

We have been consulting with a renowned turf/golf course specialist, over the past few months, in order that he could provide us with a detailed assessment of the condition of the course and soil structures.

This detailed assessment has been used to design a turf maintenance programme and a long-term course development programme.

The turf maintenance programme covers the greens, tees, bunkers, fairways, rough, green surrounds, nutrition, irrigation and disease management and is due to commence on the 1 August 2010. The new programme adds to and improves the previous turf maintenance programme which was in place.

To give you some idea of the genetic makeup of our greens we have attached a paragraph taken from our findings report:
The greens have a very shallow rooting system. The root zones hold a bare minimum level of material and overlay a clay sub soil that is very slow draining and prone to compacting. None of the greens have piped drainage systems present. Just below the immediate surface is a layer of thick fibrous thatch which was very much expected given the root zones and compacted soil structure the turf grows on. The botanical coverage is predominantly Poa Annua i.e. Annual Meadow Grass. This type of grass species is prone to common fungal disease such as fusarium and anthracnose. Because this species of grass produces seed heads which can flourish below mowing heights it creates a bumpy inconsistent putting surface. The thatch in the greens when wet holds water like a sponge thus creating bumpy putting surfaces and also inhibits drainage. During hot dry weather this surface dries out leading to isolated dry patch which becomes hydrophobic and difficult to penetrate with water. This dry patch will affect the presentation, consistency, speed and roll of the ball.

Having identified the issues with the greens, we are in a strong position to combat the issues with a robust and effective turf maintenance programme. In relation to the greens, this will include: Verti-cutting, top dressing, aeration, hollow coring, micro solid tining, deep vertical aeration, slit tining and potentially a drilling and filling operation in early October 2010.

The other areas identified in the turf maintenance programme i.e. tees, bunkers, fairways, rough and green surrounds have also been thoroughly examined and the maintenance program will also aim to improve presentation, playability, durability and finally sustainability of these areas, for the benefit of the members and visitors of Ampfield Golf Club.

The long term course development programme is due to start in the winter.
